Cruise Time!
Preparation
Choose cruise line – look for deals, most lines offer similar amenities so take your pick.
Pick cabin – inside cabins are cheaper, also quieter and darker.
Excursions – Booking through ship is more expensive, but sometimes smaller vehicles at the port might get you to a more exotic location (with a smaller and less noisy group about you too).
Know where you are going and prepare your required documents accordingly – passport, visas, necessary paperwork, etc.
Pre-pay items – water, wifi, gratuities, drinks packages, cruise itself, etc. can be paid ahead of time.
Medicals – You can also have sharps containers or other necessary medical equipment prearranged.
Cash – Bring cash as you will need it if you get off the ship and go shopping/eating.
Packing
Pack wise – the tendency is to overpack! Remember you might shop and come back with more.
Take necessities – meds if any; warm clothing (think layers); swim wear; beach slip-ons are useful!
Electronics – chargers, batteries, power banks, power strip (without a switch – read my section on the cruising page for more details!)
Over the door organizers – great for avoiding clutter in a small cabin.
Backpack – very useful for on shore trips!
Cruise Time!
Arrival – double-check the boarding time and arrive on schedule. If your ship leaves from another city consider arriving in town the day before.
Sail and sign card– store it some place away from your cellphone (magnetic stripe protection).
Cellphone Airplane Mode – switch to it while the ship is still in port or else you may forget.
Cabin Number – take a picture of it; set up door decorations if necessary.
Muster Drill – It’s mandatory. Please attend it, and on time, so as not to inconvenience others.
Buffets – Eat well, but wise – you don’t want to ruin your cruise by getting sick.
Excursions – Check time (some have orientation sessions beforehand); take Sail and Sign card and ID with you when leaving ship (passport too, if necessary)
Dress when leaving ship – some countries do NOT allow camo clothing. Know the rules.
Local transport – Some ports do have great public transport systems. Check beforehand.
Wifi spots on land – If you do need this, check with some cabin crew before you leave the boat, they have been around the block and can let you know some good spots – that may serve great food as well!
